Camp in Tuva

Dear Friends

Thank you for your interest to our music.

Last summer we held a throat singing camp in Tuva.

We had 14 students from around the world - 8 of them were from the US, 2 from Australia
2 from Denmark, 1 from France, 1 from England.
After arriving in Tuva, the students spent 1 week in Kyzyl, the capital city.
They were able to see many tourist attractions, see a Tuvan shaman,
and attend the Naadym - National Harvest Celebration.

The students then went on to spend 1 week in the deep taiga, with members of the Tuvan throat singing group Chirgilchin,
learning various styles of throat singing, traditional Tuvan instruments, as well as the Tuvan language.

This summer, we are trying to get 2 groups to go to Tuva again, in either June or July.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Please check our photos made by Russell Roesner - our student.

Thank you

Maga Bo in SF for OuterWORLDLY - this Fri Oct. 12th!

(from Rio) MAGA BO at OuterWORLDLY

dj set of transnational urban bass music from hip hop, kwaito, ragga to baile funk with flares of samba and bhangra

this Friday October 12th @ Madrone Lounge (500 Divisadero St. at Fell)
10pm $5 before 11pm and $10 after
21+ drink specials

with the Worker and Janaka Selekta open with global tech and breakbeats..

Based in Rio de Janeiro, Maga Bo is a DJ/producer working with an international collision of styles, sounds, location recordings from all continents and beats that are hard to classify. A study in the digital contortions of transnational breakbeat based bass music, his sound is an amalgamation of batucada, rai, capoeira, bhangra, loudspeaker jitter and skewed electronic beats in a borderless alley of gritty street sounds, found, stolen and modified rhythms and melodies from Brazil, Morocco, India and beyond.

His performances are a hybrid mix of DJ set and a live PA where pirate cassettes bought on the street in various parts of the world, MP3s from the internet, obscure vinyl found in underground shops meet original beats, unreleased remixes and exclusive tracks.

City of Bhangra

VIBC 2006 will feature events celebrating Bhangra and Punjabi culture throughout downtown Vancouver. Out-of-town competitors and local residents will experience firsthand the joy and exuberance of Bhangra through dance demonstrations, intimate concerts, and interactive discussion forums.

Vancouver has long been a breeding ground for some of the greatest Bhangra talent in the world. This January we bring Bhangra to the forefront and place it in a forum for all to enjoy!

Proposed events

Some tentative events for the Vancouver International Bhangra Celebration include:

-An art exhibit of original work by local artists
-Discussion forums on topics surrounding Bhangra technique,
-Bhangra in the Diaspora, and Bhangra in pop culture
-Dance demonstrations by local Bhangra dance schools
-Concerts featuring local Bhangra and fusion artists

The Competition

The Vancouver International Bhangra Celebration will conclude with the anticipated finale event, the VIBC Competition on Saturday, January 21st, 2006. On this night, 10 international teams will mount the stage of Vancouver's largest theater venue, the Queen Elizabeth Theater. As the largest and most robust venue in Vancouver, it is home to only the largest Broadway productions and theater events. On this night, the Queen Elizabeth will be home to Vancouver's premiere Bhangra event as almost 3,000 local and international attendees watch intently as the most talented Bhangra teams compete for prestige and the $5,000 grand prize.

RITUAL FOR MONEY..

A small ritual for the coming Tuesday..the 'new moon' NIGHT. Please check this out at

your respective places. On this new moon day, India has a festival of light called "Diwali".

It also has a lot of other cosmic significances too.
There is a small ritual to be done to attract money.
On a ceramic plate, place some diskettes of camphor. Wear red and face the west

direction. Burn in it cloves. Take care that the cloves should be with it's 'ball' on its

apex.the top. Let the cloves burn completely to black ash.If they have not fully burnt out,

add some more camphor diskettes.Take this black powder & put it in a small silver box &

place it wherever you place your money.

All the time while the clove is being burnt, keep on chanting "AUM HREENGM SHREENGM

NAMAH".

This is a tried & tested 'totka'.Please pass this on.Any query, please contact me.

Ward off every calamity with this...

A small recitation, done during Navratra (October 9 days from 4th to12th)..recited just 27

times, facing north in the nights..is highly effective Siddhi to ward off every calamity.

Must be repeated every year during Navratra. One must have a Ma Durga photo/idol in

front. Burn an oil lamp to HER right ; incense to HER left. Sitting on red asana &

offerring red flowers to her ..recite:-

"AUM Namo-a-stute Bhagwate, Paarshwa Chandraa-dharendra Padmaavati Sahitaaye ,may

abheeshta siddhim;
Dushtagraha bhasm bhakshyam swaaha,
Swaami prasaade kuroo kuroo swaaha;
Hillihilli Maatangani Swaaha,
Swaami prasaade kuroo kuroo swaaha".

Daily 27 times for 9 nights of Navratra. When in danger, just recite it 7 times & blow

thrice shoulder to shoulder. You will be safe.
___________________________________________________________________________
It is too vast and beyond the scope of this letter to write the ACTUAL spiritual aspect of

Navratri ( Nav=Nine: Raatri (as it is pronounced)=Nights). There are two such Navaratris in

a year. One around March and one around October/Nov....depending on the Hindu Lunar

Months. Again, there are two 'facets' of Navratri. One the Pauraanic (ancient folklore)

aspect and one metaphysical aspect. I guess you may FIND latter too on the internet. Just

type "Navratri" on Google.

Siddhi means 'attainment'....especially spiritual kind. And the person who has attained

Siddhi..is called Siddha Purush. Purush meaning Man. "The man who has attained". This

attainment can be got by many methods..but Mantras (incantations in a specific way for a

specific purpose) is the BASE.

Durga is a combination of Duh (not as in US DUHH..lol) + gaah. The combo makes it

Durga. Duh.. D pronounced in softer note as the French do. Duh means bad/evil..Gah

means to 'ward off'. So Durga means she who wards off the bad/evil etc. And there are

stories about her.

ANY QUERY PL.CONTACT ME FOR CLARIFICATION.
Blessings to all;
Chandan

Really nice to see that S. Asian and World Electronica Breakbeat music is being recognized and actually covered in the mainstream press. Thanks to all the Dhamaal crew and those in the SF music community and beyond that have contibuted to us moving forward!

Burningman: Dancing—Weds. Night @ Hookahdome

Hello Burning People,

I am super excited to be DJing for you at the Hookahdome’s Fire Spin Jam, one of Burningman’s most thrilling ethnic dance events. The fun will begin on Wednesday night, sometime after 9:00 PM. Clan Destino kicks off the night with aerial, belly dance and fire performances, and then the Fire Spin Jam begins. We will dance until kerosene runs out.... Haha!

Because this is a Hookahdome outdoor dance night, I plan to spin a kick-ass set. However, to give you expressive dancers a variety of tempos to work with, the music will be punctuated with funky midtempo dance music that will make your hips get slinky and reckless.

I will be playing a melodic set of deep, bass-heavy breaks house and funk of Middle Eastern, Asian and African origin. I will also be mixing it up with Bellydance and Bhangra music you will love.

To all you African Dancers, Tribal Bellydancers and Indian Temple Dancers, you don't need to have fire tools. There will be lots of great music that will appeal to you.

The Hookahdome is located at 3:30 & Esplanade.
http://hookahdome.tribe.net/

Looking forward to seeing you happy dancers on the Playa,
DJ Patrick Harvard (Southern California Dance Collective)

PS Also ~ Friday night @ Cirque Berzerk (2:00 and Amnesia) Sometime after 1:30 AM, I will be playing Funky Breaks and Tribal Asian Beats in a pumping ocean of bass with Janaka Selecta, Michelle Bass, Jessey Wright and Breakbeat Buddha. Come to the big circus tent.

Bhangra is a growing favorite dance style in Tempe. The Domba studio is now offering a Bhangra-inspired Workout class this fall. Check out their website at www.domba.com. And you'll soon be seeing some pieces of bhangra in their shows too. We did just a small piece at the Oasis Cafe last weekend and it was a big hit.

I just wanted to share my excitement...I just played my first bhangra dj set at an outdoor party on a large sound system this weekend!

it was so fun! It was well received and I had a lot of positive comments. I can't wait to do it again and continue to spread the bhangra luv!

event review: Dr. Zeus

In case anyone's interested...

Just went to an event last night whose headliners were UK's Dr. Zeus and Gubi Sandhu. Both were disappointing. Sandhu seemed to lack enthusiasm and seemed to be lyp-syching the whole thing (is that common with live performances?). Disappointingly, Dr. Zeus did not perform live as expected, but did a dj set (the local djs who warmed up the party did a better job).

But the first half of the night was excellent. As I said, the local djs, Reminice and another guy whose name I can't recall, were excellent (very talented mixers) and built up a great vibe in the earlier part of the night.

The location was Plush, a large Vancouver nightclub with really bad sound. I think the whole experience would have improved tenfold if the sound had been well balanced. The MC's were so loud and muddy that I thought my eardrums would bleed. The crowd was positive and energetic though, and overall I had a wonderful time.

There were two performances by female singers, which was refreshing, and both did a great job. One was a girl named Sabrina from the UK. I didn't see the name of the other girl on the advertising, and didn't catch her name last night, so I need to track that down later so can keep my eyes peeled. She was fantastic and did some great songs supported by some local rappers.

As always, the local dholis were fantastic. Birinder Narang is the best I've seen so far. He has a great presence and impeccable beats.

The night in general was great, and I can even forgive the headliners for being a let-down if only that damn sound system hadn't been so tortuous.

I would still love to see Dr. Zeus again if I knew he was performing his own music live.

track recommendations for newbies

Hi all!

New to bhangra? Not familiar with the artists or where to start?
I've made some "intorductory" compilations for friends lately that include some of the hits from the UK charts from the last year or two, some of them quite recent.

...so, if you're browsing online or looking in CD shops, keep your eyes peeled for some of these tracks! I've selected upbeat, fun party tunes by well known artists which should be easy to find.

Warning: Sometimes the artists are listed differently, especially where there are collaborations, and the spelling of titles may also vary, so keep that in mind when typing these into search engines. There are also usually several remixes of the same tracks, so listen to them all and see what you like best.

HYPNOMADIC feat. Soulsalaam + Dhol Patrol / Bhangratronic & Asian Breaks

HYPNOMADIC feat. Soulsalaam and Process Rebel is performing this Friday @ Elbo Room - You can get cheaper advance tickets here:
http://www.sunsettickets.com/evinfo.php

Hypnomadic is a modern urban dance floor hybrid of electronic beats and cultural elements featuring the dj/producer/musician team up of Soulsalaam and Process Rebel.

Having performed with Barbarito Torres of Buena Vista Social Club and Hamsa Lila at The Fillmore and at Red Bull's Ascension party at 1015 Folsom in San Francisco, Hypnomadic creates their own cinematic fusion sound. Grimey hip-hop, punchy dancehall, dirty breakbeats and rugged d'n'b all teased with ragga M.C.s, bhangratronic, vocal accapellas and live percussion with a touch of swirling dub effects. Imagine yourself dazzled by King Tubby's studio trickery gone mad!

As well as creating their own original tracks their remixes and reworks include such artists as Saul Williams (Ninja Tune Records), Muslimgauze, Mr. Oizo, MIA, Antibalas, M.C. Cantankerous, Kelis, Missy Elliot, Roots Manuva (Big Dada), Systemwide (BSI Records), Thug Emporium (Quake Trap Records, SF) and Erick Sermon (Def Jam).

PROCESS REBEL aka Chad Jones
Being a pinnacle guitarist in the Seattle "Grunge" scene, Chad also has several solo releases on Manifold Records under the moniker Totemplow. He has also collaborated with Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), DJ Spooky and Mick Harris (Earache Records, Scorn). He is currently working on the soundtrack to the new film "Twilight Men," from the directors of "Genghis Blues."
http://www.subinfinity.com

SOULSALAAM is a dj, percussionist and producer exploring beyond the limitations of genres and categories. His set flows through many styles of music, past and present, connecting the ancient masters with their contemporary electronic counterparts. He has worked, collaborated and shared the stage with Zakir Hussain, Baaba Maal (Palm Pictures), Nortec Collective, Antibalas, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Ursula Rucker (K7), Barbarito Torres (Buena Vista Social Club), Da Lata (Palm Pictures), KJ Sawka & Siamese, Freq Nasty (Skint), Dj Krush, Cheb I Sabbah (Six Degrees), Kid Beyond, Hamsa Lila, Systemwide (BSI), Dj Lorin, Koma and Bones (TCR), Lee Coombs, Garaj Mahal, J-Boogie's Dubtronic Science (OM Records), Uberzone, Shaggy Manatee (Quake Trap, SF), Dr. Israel's Brooklyn Jungle Sound System/Seven, Dub Gabriel & Professor Shehab (Baboon Records, NYC).

For such rocking music, the Bhangra tribe is pretty quite. I just discovered Bhangra recently, so I'm up for suggestions. I see that some have already been posted, so I'll check those out.

What bhangra artists or tracks do you find yourself listening to right now?

Me: Sukshinder Shinda's "Gal Sunja" cd and Mukhtar Sahota's "4 the Muzik" are definitely getting a lot of play. :)

new bhangra fan!

Hi folks!
I'm so glad this tribe was started -- I almost started one myself awhile ago, but I'm glad to see someone who probably a heck of a lot more about it beat me to it!

I've heard bhangra a lot over the years (I live in a multi-ethnic city with a large East Indian population), but I only really paid proper attention to it lately. So I'm still learning...and I'm really excited to learn more! I haven't been so excited about a genre of music for years.

My favorites right now are some of the more modern songs such as the stuff that Punjabi Hit Squad, Punjabi MC, and Rishi Rich put out. But I also really love the more desi stuff, as I really love dhol beats.

I am not really up to speed on all the filmi tracks, because I haven't seen a lot of the latest movies...but there is an Indian theater down the street from me, so I plan to catch up.

I am here to learn. Tell me everything you know, people!
